~Wombyn Radiant Love~ asked:

So after these long drawn out discussions about Imus and his remarks, there has been a lot of talk in the African American community about the word nappy. Some say it is the other “N” word. Some say it dates back to slavery and it was used by slavemasters to degrade and insult Black people because of the texture of their hair.

Im a proud sister that wears my crown with pride. I don’t call my hair nappy. But I have many friends that do and I have no problem with it cause they can label their hair however they want to. I prefer to call my hair what it is, ***** or coily. I personally don’t use the word because of the history behind it and usually when it is used by others, it is used to insult. But I also want to point out that Im not in the business of telling others what they should or shouldn’t say. I can only make choices for self:)

I was just curious about how others in the African American community felt about the word “nappy.” Are you offended by it? Why or why not?
**Thank you all for your responses!

Doesn’t having a white mother and an African father make you biracial?
Good point. Tiger Woods is considered black and he is FOUR TIMES more Asian than he is black. His father can claim he’s black. But Tiger can’t.
“Knowledge,” you say Obama’s father is African and Obama was born in America so he’s an “African American.” The only facts I get from that statement is that his FATHER is African (not him), and Obama is an American. I don’t understand how that makes Obama an “African American.” If I have an ancestor from Germany does that make me German American?

scanjet asked:

I notice this every day when dealing with African Americans. Here are some examples.

1. Someone was talking to an African American who went to an all white school. He said he didn’t really like it much. The African American replied that is a good school. Meaning an all white school is better then any other school. This is implying that the African American in this case has higher regards towards all white schools.

2. I see so many African Americans try to dissasociate from their culture. Try to act as white as possible (passing for white).

3. There was a this black/white couple I was talking to. They had two children. One turned out with a lighter tone skin then the other. They said they were happy to finally have a white child!!!! Does this mean they would perfer white children over black…..

Pretty much it seems like blacks perfer not to be black. Why is this.

Why?

If you are black, ask yourself this, “I am from Africa, or is my direct family from Africa?”

If you answered no, then why don’t you just call yourself American, or Black.

I call my self an American or White

Originally, I was from Europe, Scotland to be more specific. I would not call myself European-American, that would be dumb!

I understand the pride, but seriously, can we not get past that horrible time in history?

Now for the majority of Mexicans, this would not apply. The “Majority” have crossed the border recently (past 20 years) and so should be considered Mexican-Americans; If they can even be considered Americans at all. (Negative comment toward illegal foreigners and in NO WAY meant to show hatred towards Mexicans)

So just let me hear your thoughts, email me if you would like!

Thanks,
