An African-American is someone born here that can trace his bloodline to an ancestor who came from Africa.

LOL, like what the hell is a caucasian?
Mr. let me give you a word of advice:
We are all going to DIE one day so I’m not worried about what they CALL me I”m worried about how people TREAT me.
I’m pretty sure that term was just made up to make people feel good or to be politcally correct, which is why I don’t like PC people because they make no sense . but again treat people good because we’re all going to DIE!!! NOOOO!
and Ed, if that was true, and if the whole humans came from africa theroy was true, than everyone ould be african american. your being to general.

Americans (whether Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Arabic, Jewish, Mediterranean, or, Oriental) are Americans. Just like the original Americans, American Indians - the only true Americans. Black Americans ought distance themselves from this ridiculous expression “African American” and realise that the world has come a long way from the days of “bwana” “sahib” and “yawza, yawza, yawza!”

Exactly! I am a White South African and I was told to go back where I came from by the blacks so I have. My white compatriots here think I am rascist thanks to Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. I don’t like some blacks, some whites and some others. I am very culturally different to South African blacks but the same as an English black. Many whites in my area I wouldn’t have to my house because there’s more culture in yogurt. Ask Oprah, maybe she knows. I would feel more comfortable if I could tell my black friends a rascist joke and vice versa without taking offence. Blacks can have B.E.T but I can’t have W.E.T. It has all gone crazy. We are all different and when I sit in a kraal in South Africa, I have to leave my culture at home and behave accordingly.

Well, even though we have the least amount of african influence in our culture compared to other black people, we still are more african than you think.
Our dialect, African American Vernacular or Ebonics or whateveryouwannacallit is FULL of african influences. Pronunciation, grammar, sentence structure are all a result of the African languages our ancestors spoke. The way we cook, our use of oils, seasonings, different ingredients, are all African in origin. You like yams? Thats an african food. Collard Greens? African. Okra? Black Eyed Peas? all African. Our music is basically African music adapted to european instruments. You cant say that being called African envokes a false pride, we SHOULD BE PROUD of our heritage. Regardless of how you may feel about Africa, that is where our roots lie. Africa has influenced our consciousness much more than you realise, and it would be an act of self-loathing to claim that you arent an African, and choosing to deny that which created you and helped make you who you are today doesnt make you more american, or more honest, it makes you a house n!gga.

Ed F is wrong! An african american is someone who has immigrated to America from Africa. It’s the same thing as Korean-American, or Chinese-American. It’s to tie someone to their heritage. White people born in America are Americans. Their nationality is The United States. Black people born in America are Americans. Their nationality is The United States. The term was coined so we could readily identify with some of our heritage as well as others immigrating here. But I think that we can be excluded from that group because we didn’t necessarily board the Amistad and sign the ledger when we arrived in the U.S. As I have stated before, not every black person in America is from Africa and not every African immigrating to America is black.

I’m sorry but the words African and Black are not bad words (although i do have a problem with black) it seems you have blacks who wish to distance them selves from Africa, and Africans who wish to distance themselves from blacks. Y’ALL HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. everybody I repeat everybody you see that is Black has African Blood running through their veins, and sorry to say but I don’t care if you are 1 day out of Africa no matter where you land on this earth they consider you Black.
now what the hell made you so embarrassed of what you are I know not, but I will say that you can not hide from the truth and its in the mirror every time you brush your teeth. your DNA dictates who you are and where your people originally came from so hiding it by dropping the label of African away from American is futile when anyone looks at you they know what you are and your true nationality.
we have the distinct privilege of wearing our origin land on our skin whether you agree or not you can’t hide this; so us creating or dropping the word Africa sounds like distaste for who you are. I am very proud to have African American as the label OUR PEOPLE CHOSE FOR US TO HAVE ( THEY GAVE US THE LABEL BLACK WE DIDN’T) although I acknowledge it; I hope that the next generation will want to do away with that word when describing us, it’s an unfair label, read the definition.

I prefer Afriacan American. Black is a color and my skin is brown so that doesnt fit me. Then again I am cuban and african american. I dont let it hold me up. I choose to be called what I want. Everyone has their different opinions. Black white is a color. We can all assume sometime way back our ancestors came from Africa. People act like its a bad thing to be African American. For the record Im middle classed. I really dont get this whole black vs African American thing. You look in the mirror and look at the races from africa and can safely assume your from there. People should just stop getting hung up on useless things such as this.
