    No why?
    That is dumb..

I don’t mind being called “African American” or “Black”

See that is the problem with blacks nowadays..
Back in the 1970’s 60’s back during “Black was Beautiful” era..this would not have been an issue

To tell you the truth, even black and white is bad because it spells out extreme opposite, with white being pure and good and black being corrupt and impure. Race classifying doesnt even make since the more you think of it.

Doesn’t bother me but it kind of makes me imagine a big sign over their heads in bright lights after they say it saying I’M NOT ******!

Whites can call me black. It really doesn’t bother me.

I don’t think white people started calling black people African American until many black people started preaching political correctness and forced white people to adopt the term African American.

I’m not Black, but I AGREE WITH YOU 100%! There are White people who are born in Africa who come to the States. One of my nieces best friends is Black, but she’s from Haiti. It’s insulting to be called African-American when you’ve never been to Africa and your family hasn’t been from Africa for 500 years!

Further, there’s about 54 countries in Africa and they are all very different but have a majority of Black people. It’s kind of like saying “you all look alike to me” by grouping you altogether as “African.”

Yes, when I have been at meetings that go on and on about “African Americans,” I refer to myself as a “European American.” Of course, like Africans, there’s a big difference between a Sweedish American and an English American.

Well lets agree to make up our own name. We can take an African name meaning “blessing, or hope, or wealth” or something positive. We can’t get mad at PC people, even though they are annoying. They are trying to be respectful so we should give them a hand and actually say what offends us and what woul be a good name. Nothing sadder than confused white people, give them a break.

i kind of like calling myself european american — gives me a certain amount of class!!!

I agree. I prefer Black to African American for the same reason; I’ve never lived in Africa. But, I don’t mind being called African American. It doesn’t offend me. It’s not a racial slur, nor is it insulting, or meant to hurt.

I also don’t expect people to know that I prefer Black over African American. It’s a personal thing. Human, woman, American, etc. They all work too. I have no problem with respecting how others wish to be referred, if they let me know.

Personally I don’t see what’s so offensive about being called african american. I mean you are of african decent and you are an american so how is that offensive?

Our society likes to categorize people into tidy groups to best organize and identify people. Usually, this doesn’t take into account many people who are wrongfully categorized into such groups. It tends to generalize one aspect of a person (ie skin color), and make anyone with that specific charactersitc defined as “African American” and so forth. Peoples individualities are masked and it is assumed then, that everyone with darker shades of skin, must be “African American” when really the possibilites are endless.

I think first of all, it’s just dumb to have to categorize people, black, white, yellow, green, who care’s..we’re all people.

Unfortunately this is what soceity loves to do on it’s own. So I would think it’s important that people be recognized for their individuality and not be assumed to belong to a certain ethnic group or culture based on their outward appearance.

The ” N-word” does not describe all Black people, so it doesn’t bother me. A low life is the definition of the N-word, which anyone can fit that description. Cans have labels not people. Colored or colors are for crayons, pencils, and markers. I’m mixed and could care less what people call me.. Names are a way somepeople try to put a person down, it is just a name. People can call you anything. Does it make you it??? No!!! I got a name at birth they can call me by it.

  16. By kellie on Nov 16, 2008 | Reply

I don’t think people should be catagorized by color anytime. It puts a lable on people that some others take as a negative thing.

none of us are black it is a color not a nationality i don’t mind being called african american that is were my ancestors are from why some black try to disassociate themselves from africa to me you sound kind of ignorant

i would rather be called african american than to be called black…i like being called african american….th word black to me should only be used to describe those ignorant losers on BET

Bravo for you! I agree 100%, if you are born in America, you are an American. I have always thought African American sounded so stupid.
I even **** black/white, I am not white, you are not black.
If you go back in history you will find that most cultures have been slaves to someone at some point, in a sense we are all descended from slaves.
My daughters father was from India and people still ask her “What are you”, she always simply says “I am human, what are you?”
I think that should be the only label we use-Human.

  20. By Dujuan1973 on Nov 23, 2008 | Reply

An African-American is a person with African descent, period. I am very proud to carry that label.

WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT TO BE CALLED THAN?

How about you face it and realize your not going to like anything that white people call you!

Because I remember when I was bitched the hell out for telling this kid he was black in school his mama told me its Colored or african american! NOW ITS CHANGED AGAIN????

I am Irish American and damn proud of it! My family is IRISH. Were my parents born there? NO were my grandparents? NO!

The only Americans are the Native Americans the rest of us are “——— Americans” You should be proud that your called African American because your being considered an american!

You dont see Asians complaining that they’re called Asian Americans do you?

  23. By DB on Nov 26, 2008 | Reply

Yes! I **** it, I prefer black. As you stated we have been through so many names. Stop the maddness.

  24. By ali_al_22 on Nov 29, 2008 | Reply

I use Black as it is simple and gets the point across (you tend to say it like you mean business) but since I’m light-skinned I usually have to explain that…so for me the whole thing is ridiculous but I feel that African-American sounds more legitimate and dignified to some even if we haven’t been to Africa. As long as it doesn’t start in an N or S for me, I’m good.

  25. By NoC on Nov 30, 2008 | Reply

Why would you prefer to be called a color from a crayon box? Black people are called African American because the balck people of America came her from Africa as slaves, it gives homage to the ancestors of black people.

I do not here people of Irish desent disliking called Irish American or Italian American, these people are proud of where they come from whether they were raised in these places or not.

It is better to know where you came from so you will know where you are going.

The title American is reserved for those in this country whose ancestors came here on the Mayflower and western Europe from the way it seem in this country.

    - It doesn’t matter to me; African American, Black, American, and or Black American; it doesnt really matter which one you call me but I prefer the last three really

Africa is a continent, not a country
